Best Animated Movies for Adults

Animation, even in its earliest forms, existed before cinema. Regardless of the technique—traditional, CGI, or stop-motion—animated films today are largely associated with children's entertainment, likely a result of Disney’s massive influence. However, there are also animated movies that explore complex, adult themes in ways that live-action simply cannot, taking full advantage of the limitless possibilities of shape, color, and movement. Here are some of the best animated movies crafted specifically for adult audiences.

The Most Precious of Cargoes is a touching and delicate animation directed by Michel Hazanavicius — the same award-winning filmmaker behind The Artist. Here, he bets on a moving fable set in times of war, capable of deeply touching adult audiences. The story begins when the wife of a poor lumberjack finds an abandoned baby in the forest and decides to raise her as her own. From there, we follow how this gesture of humanity transforms the couple's life and echoes in the destinies of those who cross the child's path. With a poetic aesthetic, sensitive soundtrack and a script full of layers, the film is ideal for those looking for stories that speak of hope, courage and love in the midst of darkness. A powerful, sensitive and necessary tale.

In a scene usually dominated by colorful Pixar adventures, DreamWorks' funny stories and Disney's sugary fantasies, it is refreshing to see a true animated social satire entirely aimed at adults, co-produced and distributed by one of the biggest studios. Subtlety and refined humor are not characteristics of 'Sausage Party' and, although it is obviously rude most of the time, it has surprising touches of hilarious metaphysical concepts. Even though it is a production that criticizes consumerism, and has a paradoxical tone for being a massive product created by a studio, it is one of the most unusual animated films Hollywood has offered us so far in the 21st century.

Few series manage to build such a solid personality from the first to the last episode. Emmy-winning creator Loren Bouchard managed to preserve the essence of 'Bob's Burgers' throughout 12 seasons and in this movie he directs. 'The Bob's Burgers Movie' is a comedy that maintains the humor of the series - and, unlike many other adaptations, the feature film does not make you feel like you're watching three consecutive episodes: it tells a story that respects the style of each character. It works elegantly to satisfy long-time fans and also as a late introduction to the Belchers, an adorable and crazy misfit family that are as genuinely relatable as the characters from 'The Simpsons' and 'Family Guy'.

Mars Express - An action animation set in the 23rd century on Mars, captivates audiences with a thrilling murder investigation led by a pair of private detectives. Heavily inspired by the classic Blade Runner, which is evident in its stylized look and dense atmosphere, the film was warmly received, winning the Audience Award at the 2023 Fantasy Filmfest and also standing out at the Festival du nouveau cinéma.

Charlie Kaufman, director of "I'm Thinking of Ending Things" and screenwriter of "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," is one of those filmmakers who doesn't look at the world and society through rose-colored glasses. His gaze and interpretation are pessimistic, even though some of his films end on a high note. This isn't the case with "Anomalisa," however. Here, we follow the filmmaker as he ventures into the world of stop-motion animation to tell the story of a man who no longer finds joy in the world around him—everyone is equally dull and indistinguishable. Things change, however, when he gets involved with a stranger. It's a strong and powerful film, an animation for adults. And it will leave you sad, depressed, and disturbed—but with the positive point of finding a good reflection along the way.
