Dystopian and social experiment movies like 'The Platform' to watch online

One of the great virtues of science fiction as a genre is its ability to imagine futures through unlikely yet powerful allegories, even for the worst-case scenarios. This is the case, for example, with dystopian and social experiment movies, which present us with worlds where the breakdown of civilization brings out the worst in humanity, yet also allows us to reflect on our societies and ourselves. Below, check out a selection of movies to watch online on this theme, from the Spanish sensation The Platform to Snowpiercer and many more.

Concrete Utopia seems, on the surface, like a disaster movie. However, it's more of one of those dystopian fictions that comment on social issues. In the plot, the world has been reduced to rubble by an earthquake. What's left of civilization persists in precarious conditions, surviving in small communities trying to organize themselves to survive and rebuild, naturally generating conflicts both internally and between small societies. With solid performances and excellent production values, the film balances drama and humor to comment on topics such as immigration, nationalism, social classes, and human corruption. If you enjoyed productions like "Parasite" and "Squid Game," you'll undoubtedly appreciate it.

Long before The Hunger Games, there was the Japanese film Battle Royale, adapted by legendary director Kinji Fukasaku from the 1999 novel of the same name by Koushun Takami. The plot is set in a parallel reality where a totalitarian fascist Japan, as a measure to curb juvenile crime, forces a group of 42 high school students to kill each other on a deserted island until only one remains. As controversial as it is relevant today, the film has inspired numerous science fiction movies about social dystopias, and its stylized violence has influenced filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino.

This Spanish sci-fi dystopian is a great parable of our society, perhaps a bit simplistic and straightforward, but very direct in its ideas and violence. In a line similar to Bong Joon-ho's 'Snowpiercer' (director of 'Parasite'), 'El hoyo' makes the premise and design of its production a visual metaphor for the organization of social classes, society and economic inequality. Debut director Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia - along with his screenwriters David Desola (writer of 'Almacenados') and Pedro Rivero (director of 'Psiconautas, The Forgotten Children') - explore the resentments generated by these social differences. The film was awarded at the Toronto International Film Festival, the Goya Awards and was voted best film at the Sitges Festival.
