"Based on Jaime Hagel Echenique's 2002 period novel, the plot of 'Family Secrets' (also known by the book title 'Broken Underwear') is set in a hacienda mostly inhabited by women during the 1920s and 1950s, and deals with issues of gender inequality, machismo, domestic abuse and female empowerment. However, it does so with an entertainingly dark comedic approach, and although some of its characters fail to escape cliche, the ensemble cast gives them enough charm to make up for it."
