Why watch this film?
The story of Lady Oscar, a female military commander who served during the time of the French Revolution.
"The Rose of Versailles is an anime movie based on the 1972 shōjo manga of the same name, created by Riyoko Ikeda (which was later adapted into an anime series in the late '70s). The plot, set before and during the French Revolution, follows Marie Antoinette and her affection for General Oscar François de Jarjayes, who is actually a woman raised as a man. Produced to honor the 50th anniversary of the original manga, the film is animated by Mappa (the same studio behind Attack on Titan), so it visually meets the occasion. On its own, it's a film that retains the charm that captivated generations with the debut of the series, but it's also a great first introduction to a story that revolutionized anime and shōjo manga."
