"A Useful Ghost is a Thai supernatural comedy film, winner of the Grand Prix in the Critics' Week section at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. Set in contemporary Thailand, the movie uses dark humor and irony to tell an eccentric story about people who, after dying, return as ghosts that possess household appliances like vacuum cleaners to be close to their loved ones, as seen in the main plot. Beneath the humor lies a reflection on the importance of remembering our “ghosts,” meaning past experiences to preserve historical memory and avoid repeating the same mistakes. Although it references Thailand’s violent past of repression, coups, and dictatorships, it is a film that anyone whose country has faced similar issues can relate to.
