"Steve is the kind of film that clearly moves and excites Cillian Murphy—an actor who hasn't abandoned his style and convictions after winning the Oscar for Best Actor for Oppenheimer. Here, in one of the most compelling performances of his career, the actor plays the warden of a reformatory who's having a "dog's day." Basically, everything that can go wrong, does. Despite Tim Mielants' somewhat chaotic direction, which at times seems to be simply trying to replicate Danny Boyle's style, the film knows how to handle difficult themes and complex characters, especially by showing that the problem isn't exactly within the institution, but rather in the people who orbit this system, almost like leeches. Good not only for reflection, but also for realizing that Murphy is one of the great actors of this generation."
