The Sky Is on Fire presents a hypothetical digital ruin of a virtual Miami street. This lifeless world resonates with the monologue of a Miami resident who reflects on the desire for immortality that drives our need to capture everything in an image. A critical reflection on our hypermediatised reality.

"It would be difficult to classify 'The Sky is On Fire' as a movie or short, and perhaps it's more appropriate to categorize this work from Belgian visual artist Emmanuel van der Auwera as a digital installation translated into a video essay short. This virtual recreation of a ruined Miami street (created from images that only build a shell, but not its content) has as a counterpoint an optimistic monologue about the permanence of human memory in the future, thanks to digital technology. It is therefore a critique of contemporary society, trapped in hypermediatization and consumption, where identity and memory are only empty images, an imminent mausoleum of the human species built in bits."
