The story centers on a group of young people who travel back in time when they are in a movie theater just before closing time. They witness deaths during the closing days of Japan’s feudal times and on the battlefront in China before they are sent to Hiroshima just before the Aug. 6, 1945, atomic bombing of the city.

Directed by Nobuhiko Obayashi, this Japanese fantasy drama clocks in at three hours with a plot that plays around with experimentalism and abstraction. It tells the story of a group of young people who time travel when they are in the cinema, just before closing time. On this journey, they witness deaths during the last days of Japan's feudal era and on the battlefield in China, before being sent to Hiroshima, just before the atomic bombing of August 6, 1945 in the city. A strong and interesting film, which pays homage to Japanese cinema and takes us into the history of Japan. Some will tire of the story. But those who know how to take advantage of this Obayashi production will find a courageous, powerful and very personal movie."
