After witnessing a bizarre, traumatic incident involving a patient, Dr. Rose Cotter starts experiencing frightening occurrences that she can't explain. Rose must confront her troubling past in order to survive and escape her horrifying new reality.
"The horror genre is a tricky one when it comes to reinventing itself, especially for the most passionate fans. It's very easy to fall into cliched formulas with poorly written scripts. Fortunately, 'Smile' manages to break away from some of that, even though it doesn't quite get there. The story is good, bringing plenty of territory to be explored about trauma, mental illness and how these things surround us. It's a well-made and desperate psychological horror, as a good horror movie should be. The protagonist, played by Sosie Bacon ('13 Reasons Why'), is one of the best parts of the production. You genuinely root for her, even though the ending is slightly predictable. The only caveat is that the plot ends up resembling 'The Conjuring' from 2014, leaving originality a bit aside.
