Based on real-life events, Strangled is set in the provincial Hungary of the 1960s at the height of socialism, when a series of atrocious murders shock the small town of Martfű.

"This is a Hungarian psychological thriller based on real events, about a murderer of women who haunted the Eastern European country during the 1960s. Director Árpád Sopsits is very competent at creating a suspenseful atmosphere, which is mixed with the toxicity of the Cold War-era politics. What also helps create the atmosphere is the photography of Gábor Szabó, a cinema veteran with over 40 years of career. It should be said that the story is quite disturbing and the feature, as a whole, won't be too palatable for those seeking a Hollywood-style production."
