"Hit Man marks the triumphant return of filmmaker Richard Linklater after three lackluster films: Last Flag Flying, Where'd You Go, Bernadette?, and Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Adventure. In the story, Gary (Glen Powell, from Top Gun: Maverick) is an ordinary guy. He teaches philosophy and psychology at a college, owns two cats, and is friends with his ex-wife. In his spare time, as a side job, he works undercover for the police – specifically, he pretends to be a professional hitman. And it is while playing this role that he falls in love with Madison (Adria Arjona), a woman who wants to hire him to kill her husband. How to deal with that? It’s a story of misunderstood and impossible love between Gary and Madison, which borders on the absurd. With another director, it could be a spy comedy about characters who don’t know how to navigate different personalities – something like the recent Family Plan. However, as fun as it is, Linklater knows how to extract something more from the plot, discussing themes like ego, superego, id, Freud, and Jung, and featuring brilliant chemistry between Powell and Arjona, placing the film on a high shelf in Linklater’s filmography."
