Why watch the movie Kokomo City?
"Kokomo City is a straightforward and sincere, yet always sensitive documentary about the reality of the prostitution world for trans individuals. Directed by the trans singer and TV celebrity D. Smith, the documentary chronicles the experiences of four sex workers in New York and Atlanta: Daniella Carter, Dominique Silver, Liyah Mitchell, and Koko Da Doll, whose testimonies shed light on the lives of discrimination and repression that not only they carry, but also those they interact with. As visually dynamic as it is entertaining and political in equal measure, it is one of the best and most authentic documentaries about the trans community in recent times."

In her directorial debut KOKOMO CITY, two-time Grammy-nominated producer, singer, and songwriter D. Smith puts forth a wildly entertaining and refreshingly unfiltered portrait of four Black transgender sex workers in Atlanta and New York City. Holding nothing back, Daniella Carter, Koko Da Doll, Liyah Mitchell, and Dominique Silver unapologetically break down the walls of their profession with energy, challenge, humor, and hard-earned wisdom. Executive produced by Lena Waithe, KOKOMO CITY won the Sundance Film Festival’s NEXT Innovator Award and NEXT Audience Award, as well as the Berlinale’s Audience Award in the Panorama Documentary Section.
