Coup de Chance

Coup de Chance is Woody Allen's 50th film and, as of its release, likely his last feature. It's hard to say that this film, probably his final one, is much different from what he's done before. Shot in France, and for the first time with actors speaking a language other than English, the film follows a love triangle, a theme that has appeared dozens of times in Allen's stories. In this case, the young Fanny (Lou de Laâge) is tired of the bourgeois life she leads with her husband, Jean (Melvil Poupaud). A new spark comes into her life when Alain (Niels Schneider), an old high school friend, reappears by chance. From there, Allen explores themes like married life, chance, luck, and jealousy—bordering on psychopathy. It’s a genuinely entertaining film, but not much more than that, offering some situations that bring a subtle smile, so typical of Allen's films. For a final movie in his career, Woody Allen could have taken more risks, going beyond love triangle stories. Even so, it helps to satisfy the longing to dive back into the idyllic world the American filmmaker has always created in his movies.
