Why watch the movie The Last of the Sea Women?
"The Last of the Sea Women is a fascinating and emotional documentary from A24 and Apple TV+ that provides a glimpse into the Haenyeo, women on Jeju Island, South Korea, who have maintained a centuries-old tradition of free diving (without oxygen assistance) to supply food for their communities. A cultural symbol of the country, once called "real mermaids," they now see their way of life at risk of extinction due to environmental threats and aging, as most of their members are elderly. Through stunning underwater photography, the documentary tells the story of these women’s perseverance as they face inevitable and virtually unstoppable social changes. Yet, their unwavering persistence will inspire and move you."
