Red Rooms

"Red Rooms is a unique horror thriller where fear is not generated by a supernatural entity, an invincible monster, or an incomprehensible force, but by humanity itself. The story follows Kelly-Anne (Juliette Gariépy, in a chilling performance), a fashion model who becomes obsessed with the media coverage of a serial killer accused of brutally ending the lives of three girls in "red rooms," snuff videos consumed on the dark web through bitcoins. Her obsession becomes so extreme that she camps outside the courthouse in the cold, trying to get a spot to attend the trial in person, with unclear motivations. The power of Red Rooms lies not in what it shows (we never see the violence from the videos repeated on-screen), but in what it hides and what our perception of it says about us. Through its premise and the behavior of its characters, the film reflects on our fascination with true crime and its widespread media consumption, questioning whether the tragedy of others is being exploited instead of sensitizing the audience when spectacle is made from these cases. One of the most chilling and intelligent films on the subject in recent years."
