Two friends stage 'Hamlet' in Grand Theft Auto, facing reality in a wild film.
Trailer
Why watch this film?
Two unemployed friends have a fresh idea: they want to stage Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’ in Grand Theft Auto. But even in a virtual world, reality intrudes in a wild and trippy film shot entirely inside the ultra-violent video game.
"Grand Theft Hamlet is a film that, due to its premise and methodology of production, might provoke an automatic rejection, but don’t let that steer you away from this curious (and meaningful) experience. Directed by Pinny Grylls, this documentary, which is still a product of the COVID-19 pandemic, follows actor Sam Crane (the star of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in London), who, laid off due to the pandemic, takes refuge in the popular video game Grand Theft Auto, where he attempts to stage a production of Hamlet entirely within the virtual world of the game. Beyond the novelty of his experiment, the film raises important questions about artists' search for purpose in an adverse world. All of this is delivered with a generous dose of humor courtesy of the hyper-violent world of Grand Theft Auto, which will surely bring some unexpected laughs."
