A Pineapple Republic - A History of Pineapple in Hawaii tells the story of pineapple in the islands. Don Francisco de Paula y Marin, a Spanish adviser to King Kamehameha I (King of the Hawaiian Kingdom), brought the first cultivated pineapples to the islands. From that point forward, no other place on earth is associated more closely with the majestic fruit. Its history is THE HISTORY of the islands. The film follows the industry's beginning when Hawaii ruled itself, through the overthrow, to the present. The individuals and issues that moved the industry; a diverse diaspora of people who came to work the plantations and left their imprint on Hawaii.
