Happiness does not make a good story. According to family legend, at the age of three I asked my mother, Why do we live with this man? This man being my father. I Never Said I Wasn't Happy is a candid portrait of a rural Midwestern family by a Midwest daughter. Father, mother and daughter are all caught up in a dance of control. Before and after the death of her father, Sara Peak Convery (filmmaker and artist) obsessively examines her parents' difficult relationship through the lens of vibrant painting, photography, 16mm film and revealing interviews. She observes how her mother finally claims her own identity after the death of her husband, as a widow. Not all losses are losses.
