I Am a Caregiver is a documentary feature about the challenges, needs, and fragility of family caregivers. When a nursing home or other facility is not an option- or the answer, the sacrifice is often made to care for a loved one first-hand. It is more than a notion, and it is less than ideal. Film creator and writer Kathy O. Lofton takes a private glimpse into the lives of a few people, who each share their diverse perspectives and experiences as it relates to seeing after a loved one in the home. The dialogue is relevant to the national conversation on growing older, living longer and how income and access affect quality of life. Finally, it indirectly alludes to weaknesses in healthcare policy and employment conflict for caregivers. Most Americans are not prepared financially, or perhaps even emotionally, to care long-term for an infirmed loved one. Let alone are most Americans ready to be cared for. The film begs the question, "Who will dance with you and your loved ones when the proverbial music stops, and how well?" It might not apply to you today, but it could happen to you tomorrow.
