After 16 years in Brooklyn, working three low-paying jobs and collecting bottles on the street in his spare time and sending the bulk of his earnings home to his family in Mexico, Felipe decided to return after almost two decades. But when he informs his family of his homecoming, he discovers that they've squandered the money, are deeply in debt and don't want him to return. They need him to stay in the US.
"In the U.S., it is unquestionable that the migrant crisis is one of the biggest and most relevant issues of our time, depicted in film from such diverse angles as documentary ('Un abrazo de tres minutos', by Everardo González), hyperrealistic fiction ('Los bastardos', by Amat Escalante), docufiction ('Ya no estoy aquí', by Fernando Frías) and even comedy ('Acorazado', by Álvaro Curiel). The documentary 'Ya me voy', by Lindsey Cordero and Armando Croda, portrays the experience of a single character, Felipe Hernández, and even though we didn't learn everything about him in the end, his experience represents that of many other immigrants far from home: displaced in their adoptive country, unknown to their own families, trapped in a limbo outlined by the border. It is certainly a movie that will open your eyes, and which deserved a special mention from the jury at Morelia Film Festival in 2018."
