Qin Shaoyou and Su Dongpo's sister Xiaomei a pair of talented scholar and lovely girl. The two both have sparkling writing but neither give way to the other. Xiaomei sets Shaoyou a very difficult task even in the wedding night. When the empress dowager invites Xiaomei for ode writing and companion, a friend incites Shaoyou to visit versifying girl Wen Juan. Juan has admired Shaoyou for days and neglected her childhood sweetheart Lin Ziping. When Shaoyou pays a visit to Juan, Xiaomei disguises as a man and tail after him. Juan is attracted by Xiaomei's relaxed and elegant appearance, and in mistake for Shaoyou. So she totally follows Xiaomei's advice and drives real Shaoyou away as a lunatic. Juan wants to stay together with Xiaomei for life, but Xiaomei realizes the awkward position. Xiaomei gives Juan a jade pendant as authenticating object, then tells Ziping the truth and promises to buy back Juan's freedom for her marriage with Ziping. When Juan knows everything, she makes an uproar at Shaoyou's house and pretends to marry Shaoyou to the death. Su Dongpo appears with Ziping in Xiaomei's panic and stops the farce. Everyone calms down and they hold a banquet to celebrate Juan and Ziping's marriage.
