All 5 George R.R. Martin-Written Twilight Zone Episodes, Ranked

Long before George R. R. Martin's sprawling fantasy world was adapted into the TV shows "Game of Thrones," "House of the Dragon," and "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms," he was writing scripts for the first of three revivals of "The Twilight Zone." During the show's 1980s run, Martin earned multiple credits across its first two seasons, including several "teleplay by" and "written by" episodes, along with work as a story editor. The five stories that Martin wrote for "The Twilight Zone" are largely in keeping with the franchise's template, featuring relatable characters dealing with bizarre events, and most

A Heartbreaking Steven Spielberg Drama Was Based On A Banned Book

One of my favorite novels is Bohumil Hrabal's "Too Loud a Solitude," and it contains a line I think about every time I read something new: "My briefcase is full of books and that very night I expect them to tell me things about myself I don't know." For while the act of reading is looking inward at someone else's words on a printed page, great writing has the power to expand one's mind and perspective in almost limitless directions. Banning and burning books has the opposite effect, closing things off and denying other people the freedom to explore ideas and make their own minds up. Sadly, the contentious act of censoring books in the United States has a long and regrettable history reaching back as far as the first European settlers on the continent. One of the earliest examples was William Pynchon's "The Meritorious Price of Our Redemption

Whoopi Goldberg Releases Tribute to The Color Purple Composer Quincy Jones

The tributes to Quincy Jones, who passed away on Sunday night at the age of 91, have been pouring in across the various industries he worked in and from the fans who respected his work. While all of these tributes have meaning, one struck an emotional chord today when Oscar-winning actress Whoopi Goldberg spoke about her dear friend, whom she first met when he produced and composed the score for 1985's The Color Purple, the film that earned Goldberg her first Oscar nomination. Goldberg, who is the moderator on ABC's The View, took a moment before the first commercial break following their coverage of the upcoming presidential election to speak about Jones, clearly getting emotional before speaking about her friend. Following a deep sigh, something that was reflected by the supportive reactions of her co-hosts, Goldberg said, "I can't even explain what's happening in my head right now. We just lost the extraordinary Quincy Jones,

The Color Purple Author Alice Walker Reacts To New Movie Fully Depicting Book's Queer Romance

Alice Walker praises the new adaptation of The Color Purple for properly depicting the lesbian relationship between Celie and Shug, stating that it is important for audiences to see that "love is love." Previous adaptations of The Color Purple downplayed the lesbian relationship, but the latest adaptation celebrates it and recognizes its significance in Celie's journey to empowerment. The film stays true to the source material and portrays physical affection between Celie and Shug onscreen. The Color Purple author Alice Walker reacts to the new adaptation’s depiction of a queer romance. Directed by Ghanaian filmmaker Blitz Bazawule, this new adaptation of Walker’s Pulitzer winning novel tells the story of Celie (Fantasia Barrino), a Black woman who lived through the tumultuous era of the early 1900s. The Color Purple Star Reveals 1 Flaw With Steven Spielberg’s 1985 Version

Taraji P. Henson believes that Spielberg's 1985 version of The Color Purple missed culturally by portraying Black people as constantly stuck in trauma, when in reality they find joy and celebrate life. Henson emphasizes that Black people laugh, sing, go to church, dance, and fight for joy despite being continuously oppressed and kept under a thumb. This is what they have and what keeps them going. Henson promises that the new version of The Color Purple will be different, with vibrant coloring and a portrayal that captures the light and brightness of Black joy and celebration. Taraji P. Henson reveals one shortcoming in Steven Spielberg’s 1985 version of The Color Purple. Based on Alice Walker’s 1982 novel of the same name, Spielberg’s coming-of-age period drama centers around Celie Harris, a teenage Southern woman who struggles to find her identity following brutal abuse from her father and others over four decades.
