10 beloved classic sci-fi characters who were perfectly recast

It's almost impossible to imagine certain sci-fi characters being played by anyone else but their original actor. Then, someone else comes along and puts their own spin on an icon of the genre, while also honoring their legacy. In the best cases, it then becomes just as tricky to remember a time from before the new actor ever stepped into the shoes of their predecessor. Of course, there can be various reasons a classic sci-fi character can be recast. Oftentimes, it's because a movie or TV show is being rebooted. In other scenarios, a story is revisited years later, and the original actor has either passed away or else aged out of their role.

Star Trek's Brent Spiner Was Fired From The Star Wars Universe Years Before Data

Prior to landing the high-profile role of Data on "Star Trek: The Next Generation," Brent Spiner was briefly part of the "Star Wars" universe. So briefly, in fact, that we probably never even got a chance to listen to him perform the role he was recruited for, as the actor was fired from his "Star Wars" gig before his work made it to air. On an episode of the chat show "Dropping Names with Brent and Jonny," as hosted by Spiner and his "Next Generation" co-star Jonathan Frakes, Spiner and Frakes were interviewing Terry Matalas — the showrunner on "Star Trek: Picard" Season 3 and the acclaimed Marvel TV series "VisionQuest" — when

Patrick Swayze And Jonathan Frakes Starred In A Civil War Western Series With An All-Star Cast

Patrick Swayze and Jonathan Frakes were just two of the many, many stars to appear in "North and South," a trilogy of miniseries about the Civil War that aired on ABC in the '80s and '90s. Based on the book series by best-selling author John Jakes, "North and South" focused on two friends and their families after they found themselves on opposite sides of the American Civil War. Swayze played Orry Main, a member of a plantation-owning South Carolina family who goes to West Point and befriends George Hazard, a Northerner from a manufacturing family played by James Read.

George Lucas Has a Blunt Message for His Critics: ‘I Don’t Pay Attention’

George Lucas has spent nearly five decades as one of the most scrutinized filmmakers in Hollywood history, fielding endless commentary on everything from the prequel trilogy’s dialogue to the franchise’s diversity. Rather than growing more defensive with age, though, the ‘Star Wars’ creator seems to have arrived at a place of genuine indifference toward what critics think of his work. That mindset has come into sharper focus recently, as Lucas has stepped back into the public eye following years spent largely out of the spotlight. Between promoting his long-delayed museum project and reflecting on his filmmaking legacy, he’s been unusually candid about how little weight he gives to professional criticism.

Remember Star Wars: Detours? You Can Finally See It!

In October 2013 we published a story headlined "Will We Ever See Star Wars: Detours? Seth Green Thinks We Will". Almost thirteen years later, Green has an actual answer for us! At a San Diego Comic-Con panel in July, he revealed that a rotating selection of Star Wars: Detours episodes will play inside the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, the institution George Lucas has spent years building in Los Angeles, from its opening on September 22nd. "We made a show with George, an animated series," Green said. "It's called Detours, and there's going to be a curation of episodes from that show on display for the public." Our 2013 piece caught Green mid-optimism.
