Magenta Light Studios Nabs U.S. and Canadian Distribution Rights to Brazilian Crime Drama ‘The King of the Internet’ (Exclusive)

Magenta Light Studios has acquired the U.S. and Canadian distribution rights to “The King of the Internet” (“O Rei da Internet”), the acclaimed Brazilian crime drama from filmmaker Fabrício Bittar. Based on the true story of Daniel Nascimento, a teenage hacker who became one of Brazil’s most notorious cybercriminals, the film is vying to represent Brazil in the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars and is slated for a theatrical release later this year. “Set against the early days of Brazil’s internet culture, the film combines a propulsive crime story with a coming-of-age narrative, exploring the allure of technology, money and online notoriety,” Magenta Light Studios stated. Directed by Bittar, who co-wrote the screenplay with Vinícius Perez, the film follows Daniel, played by João Guilherme, from his early fascination with computers to his emergence as one of Brazil’s most skilled young hackers. Isabel Review: A Slow Pour Through the Streets of Brazil

Isabel places its protagonist inside a very exact corner of São Paulo luxury dining. Marina Person plays Isabel, a sommelier whose calm professional surface covers a serious creative unease. At the Michelin-starred restaurant where she works, knowledge keeps running into the fixed logic of sales. Tommaso, her boss, dismisses her interest in natural, rougher wines and favors safer labels with cleaner profit margins. The conflict gives the film its first clean narrative line: Isabel has taste, skill, and status, and none of them grants her real authority. Her dream is a place where curation can happen without surrender. Fred, her partner, gives that dream a gentler setting. Their backyard winemaking

‘Isabel’ Review: A Brazilian Sommelier Dreams Small in a Film That Eventually Abandons Her

Two films compete for life in “Isabel,” and their lack of synthesis creates a fuzzy mental affect familiar to anyone who ever underestimated their alcohol tolerance. In striving to be both a character study of a dissatisfied sommelier and a picaresque tale of ambition in São Paulo’s gentrified districts, director Gabe Klinger fails to land the emotional reality of his eponymous lead character, Isabel. When you title a film after a character you gotta make her your center of gravity. Yet, as this film unfolds, it becomes increasingly unmoored from Isabel which, like a domino effect of two, makes the social aspects feel loudly anonymous, like so much wine-bar white noise. This failure to launch betrays a promising first act, which sets up a potentially compelling tale of — to counter “Marty Supreme” — dreaming small. We meet Isabel in a state of material comfort and creative stagnation. She has a home,

‘I’m Still Here’ Producer Rt Features Joins Gabe Klinger’s Wine World Dramedy ‘Isabel,’ Urban Sales Brings Film to EFM (Exclusive)

Brazil’s Rt Features, producer of Walter Salles’ Oscar-nominated “I’m Still Here,” is backing “Porto” director Gabe Klinger’s São Paulo-set wine world dramedy “Isabel,” which is currently in post-production. “Porto,” the director’s previous film, executive produced by Jim Jarmusch, was acquired for theatrical distribution in over forty markets after its San Sebastián premiere in 2016. “Isabel” tells the story of a woman in her early 50s who wants to open her own wine bar after being the head sommellière for a Michelin-starred restaurant. The feature-length project was shot in December on location in São Paulo. Klinger directed “Isabel” from an original screenplay he wrote in collaboration with lead actress Marina Person. Other cast members include Caio Horowicz (“I’m Still Here”) and John Ortiz (“American Fiction”). In the film, a woman endangers her sanity and relationships to open an independent business, which Klinger alludes is “a thinly veiled metaphor for filmmaking.
