Serielizados Prizes: Hagai Levi’s ‘Etty’ and ‘Astonishing’ ‘Killing a Bear’ Win Big as ‘El Observatorio’ Bags the Mind the Gap Pitch Prize

Influential Israeli creator Hagai Levi and prominent Spanish TV-making duo Jorge and Alberto Sánchez-Cabezudo (“La Zona”) won best international and national series at Barcelona’s Serielizados for “Etty” and “Killing a Bear” respectively. The prizes for Serielizados two competitive sections were announced Saturday night at a Serielizados awards ceremony. Both series in six-parts reflect the boldness of their respective creators, who broke new ground within traditional genres. In the French-Dutch-German show “Etty,” based on Dutch Jewish author Etty Hillesum’s diaries, Levi deliberately opted for a modern spin to the period piece in which we follow the passionate 27-year-old Etty as she embarks on a spiritual and emotional journey in a Nazi-occupied Amsterdam. In the Spanish show “Killing a Bear” (“Matar a un oso”) the Sánchez-Cabezudo brothers brought innovation to the crime genre, making a bear the victim, relating the crime from the Pov of multiple characters, and expanding the

‘Celeste’ Creator Diego San José, Director Elena Trapé on Turning a Tax Inspector Into ‘Dirty Harry’

After turning Spain’s tax agency into the unlikely engine of a noir-tinged comedy, “Celeste” creator Diego San José and director Elena Trapé are taking aim at something far more sacred in Spain: soccer. The six-part second season of the Movistar Plus original brings Carmen Machi (“La Mesías”) back as Sara Santano, the tax inspector who spent Season 1 trying to prove that a globe-trotting Latin music star owed €20 million ($22.4 million) in Spain. This time round, the series rewinds to an earlier point in Sara’s career and revisits Figueroa, the Argentine soccer star whose earlier tax case marked the only professional failure of Sara’s otherwise distinguished career. The social equation flips with him. Sara embodies one of Spain’s least-loved public figures; Figueroa is a soccer idol whose failings can be forgiven as long as he delivers on the pitch. Grup Mediapro Companies Bet on Big Ideas, Local Voices and Cross Border Muscle

Spain’s independent production scene is leaning into a familiar playbook — strong creators, distinctive local stories and plenty of hustle — while looking for new ways to make those stories travel. At the 6th Iberseries & Platino Industria confab in Madrid, executives from Imagina companies Globomedia, 100 Balas, Big Bang Media, Cimarrón Cine and El Terrat laid out strategies that, despite their different slates, share a common thread: don’t chase scale for scale’s sake. Build projects around talent, stay nimble and find the right production model for each story. Globomedia’s entertainment slate remains closely tied to comedy, a genre that director general Maria Jose Rodríguez said is embedded in the company’s DNA. The company has been behind influential Spanish TV titles including “Sé lo que hicisteis” and “Caiga quien caiga” — shows that, she argued, helped reshape the country’s television landscape. “Comedy is the best tool we have to entertain,
