James Bond's Greatest Ally Got His First Solo Mission In Comic Books

As long as there has been James Bond, there has been Felix Leiter. The character was introduced in the very first Bond novel, "Casino Royale," all the way back in 1953, and was initially written as a CIA agent and former U.S. Marine who allies with Bond while working with NATO's Joint Intelligence Staff. Leiter was a way for the author to dramatize the so-called "special relationship" between the UK and US, though 007 himself was always the dominant agent. When Bond transitioned to the big screen with 1962's "Dr. No," Leiter came with him. Jack Lord played the character in Bond's first big screen outing, but would be replaced by Cec Linder when the character returned in 1964's "Goldfinger." Still, Leiter remained a part of the 007 movie franchise throughout its six-decade run, with seven actors portraying the character across that time. Most recently, Jeffrey Wright took on the

9 Actors Who Played James Bond Ally Felix Leiter

Felix Leiter's American identity distinguishes him from the largely British gallery of James Bond's allies, reflecting the special relationship between the US and UK. The portrayal of Felix Leiter in the James Bond film franchise has historically struggled to find the right way to represent the character, with numerous actors being recast. Jeffrey Wright's portrayal of Felix Leiter in the Daniel Craig James Bond films brings a somber intensity that meshes well with the darker tone of the franchise, creating a dynamic of mutual respect with Bond. Felix Leiter has been a part of the James Bond franchise for as long as the British secret agent himself, with numerous actors stepping in to play the role. The American secret agent first appeared in Ian Fleming’s original James Bond novel, “Casino Royale”. The character’s name was borrowed from two of Fleming’s own friends, Ivar Felix Bruce and Oatsie Charles Leiter.

Why James Bond Recast Felix Leiter In Goldfinger

Among James Bond movies, "Goldfinger" stands as the film that cemented 007's status as a global icon. Guy Hamilton's 1964 effort has since become known as the blueprint for all future Bond films, establishing longstanding tropes that still define the franchise today. A globe-spanning adventure, "Goldfinger" introduced that gadget-filled Aston Martin DB5 alongside legendary Bond girl Pussy Galore, played by the late Honor Blackman. Then there was that famous laser beam scene, in which Sean Connery's Bond is strapped to a table and forced to await an inexplicably slow death. But it wasn't just gadgets and Bond girls with dodgy names that "Goldfinger" brought to the table. Richard Maibaum and Paul Dehn's script also introduced more subtle staples to the 007 saga, including an opening sequence seemingly unrelated to the film's main plot and a testy relationship between the titular spy and Desmond Llewelyn's Q that established the pair's dynamic going forward.
