‘SNL UK’ Is Having a Moment As Cynthia Erivo’s ‘Nigerian Wicked’ Sketch Nears 2M Views

Saturday Night Live UK is getting attention at the end of the first part of its second season, led by Cynthia Erivo’s “Nigerian Wicked” sketch, which has nearly 2 million views on YouTube. Erivo hosted the Season 2 finale on Saturday, Oct. 24, and The Hollywood Reporter asked whether the Sky series has “finally found its groove.” Why is ‘SNL UK’ getting attention? The Hollywood Reporter called “Nigerian Wicked” the show-stealer of the finale and reported that its YouTube clip hit one million views in less than 24 hours. Aimee Lou Wood, a former SNL UK host, shared the sketch and wrote, “I will write a book on the love I have for

A Peek Into ‘SNL UK’: Strict Security, Giddy Cynthia Erivo and Sometimes More a Party Than a TV Set

The Hollywood Reporter was gifted one of London’s hottest tickets on Saturday night: a seat at SNL UK‘s final show of the year. At the city’s Television Centre, it is a behemoth operation. Hundreds of people eat, sleep, and breathe this show for the entirety of its two-month run. Entering the building is not unlike being back at university — the food hall is bustling, people nervously hug one another, and the sound of a live band rehearsing floats through the walls. Unlike university, security here is almost uncomfortably overbearing. A jittery energy — and distinct buzz — percolates. It’s 9 p.m. The countdown to showtime is on, and this team still has something to prove. The Sky spinoff of Lorne Michaels’ long-running NBC sketch show boasted solid viewership numbers in its first installment earlier this year, led by SNL hall-of-famer Tina Fey. Her inaugural episode notched up over 220,000 viewers in Britain,

‘SNL UK’ & Cynthia Erivo Give Elphaba-Glinda Shippers A ‘Nigerian Wicked’ Sapphic Parody

Although the Wicked movies may not have given LGBTQ fans the sapphic moment they wanted for Elphaba and Glinda, Saturday Night Live UK heard their demands. On this weekend’s episode of the sketch comedy show, host Cynthia Erivo returned to the magical franchise for the parody Nigerian Wicked, in which she mixed it up by playing Glinda, opposite Ayoade Bamgboye as Glinda. The low-def take on the movie features the Shiz roommates in some familiar scenes, including Glinda giving Elphaba a makeover, as well as some not so familiar scenes, like Glinda slapping Elphaba because she’s “classless” and judging her for eating a hardboiled egg. Before making their way to “LagOz” to meet the Wizard (Hammed Animashaun), the pair shares a steamy moment, pulling away before they kiss. As they arrive in the “Emerald, White and Emerald City,” Glinda asks for a Birkin, and Elphaba requests a “skinny Bbl that defies gravity.

Cynthia Erivo Plays Glinda in ‘Nigerian Wicked’ Sketch on ‘SNL U.K.’: ‘She Wants a Bbl That Defies Gravity’

Cynthia Erivo spoofed “Wicked” during her stint hosting “SNL U.K.,” this time taking on the role of Glinda in “Nigerian Wicked.” Alongside Ayoade Bamgboye as Elphaba, Erivo — sporting a blonde wig and pink velour tracksuit — starred in a lo-fi, melodramatic version of the Oscar-nominated musical in which the two enemies-turned-friends go off to meet the Wizard of LagOz. In “Wicked,” Erivo’s Elphaba and Ariana Grande’s Glinda express their frustration with each other in the song “What Is This Feeling.” But in “SNL U.K.’s” Nollywood version, Glinda simply slaps Elphaba across the face. “Glinda, you slapped me!” Bamgboye’s Elphaba says, to which Erivo’s Glinda replies: “Yes, because you are very classless.” The sketch also reimagines Glinda and Elphaba’s makeover scene, with Elphaba saying: “Glinda, I can’t afford this!” “When we go to the Wizard, it will all pay off,” Erivo as Glinda replies. “The Wizard?
