‘Donnie Darko’: THR’s 2001 Review

On October 26, 2001, writer-director Richard Kelly’s Donnie Darko opened in theaters following its Sundance Film Festival bow early in the year. The feature, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jena Malone, made just over $8 million globally. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below: Quick: What rhymes with “Darko”? “Bizarro,” “sicko,” “weirdo,” “nutso.” You get the idea of this film real fast from the tide, which is the good and bad news. Playing in the dramatic competition at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Donnie Darko is the latest progeny of the alienated, upper-middle-class, private school-kid genre. Prime Video Officially Loses Russell Crowe's Best-Reviewed Crime Classic

Fans of Russell Crowe's work were spoiled for choice in the last few weeks, with Netflix having debuted the psychological drama film Unabomber, which has since passed the 50 million views mark on the streamer. Around the same time, Crowe starred alongside Ethan Hawke in the Western drama film The Weight, which has now been released on the PVOD market. The Weight is notable for being the best-reviewed film that Crowe has starred in since 1999's The Insider, directed by Michael Mann. The best-reviewed movie of Crowe's entire acting career was also released in the 1990s. It's currently streaming on Prime Video in the United States, but only for a little while longer.

'The Lincoln Lawyer' Star's 149-Minute Legal Thriller Officially Leaves Netflix

With Practical Magic 2 now available to stream at home and The Rainmaker having recently returned with a second season, perhaps it's the perfect time to revisit a Sandra Bullock-John Grisham collab. Bullock starred in a hit Grisham adaptation three decades ago, and the movie in question is currently streaming on Netflix in the United Kingdom, but only for a little while longer. The film was released during a particularly successful streak for Grisham adaptations, which ended not long afterward with a couple of high-profile box-office underperformers. With The Rainmaker having fueled a resurgence for Grisham's brand of legal thriller storytelling — it's currently among the most-watched shows on

15 Best Political TV Shows Of All Time, Ranked

As exhausting as politics is, there's no denying it makes for extraordinary entertainment. The worst examples in scripted television are overly precious with the subject, steering themselves (intentionally or otherwise) toward self-conscious moral grandstanding and browbeating, with the covert intention of convincing a viewer their neighbor might be the enemy. When done right, political shows unite the audience rather than divide, exposing how political systems work for and against them. The best of the political subgenre has taken many shapes — sunny workplace sitcoms, idealistic character studies, salacious melodramas, and pitch-black satires. At their most optimistic, the shows try to present
