Mina Sundwall Doesn’t Actually Want to Go to Space

Mina Sundwall might be playing , but she doesn't actually love the idea of being lost in space. Or being in space, period. A testament to her acting skills, Sundwall convincingly plays someone who is excited about being a colonist on a different planet. But in real life, the idea of being alone in an infinite, unexplored dark place actually freaks her out. "I'm very scared of it in the sense that I'm not a very big fan of being in the dark and that feeling of being isolated and having no way of getting back to where you came from," she told PureWow in 2020. ‘Tenzing’ Review: A Remarkable Adventure That Puts the Audience Right Up on Mount Everest, Along with the First Two Men — One a Sherpa, Overlooked by History — to Scale It

The movies are having a mountain-climbing moment. More than a moment, really — it’s been building since 2018, the year that saw the release of not one but two jaw-dropping, vertigo-inducing, heart-in-the-throat documentaries, “Free Solo” and “The Dawn Wall,” that took you right up to the places that climbers crave and that most of us wouldn’t dare to go near. But as these films demonstrate, we might well dream of it. The new mountaineering movies are delirious vicarious cinema, employing technological means and a filmmaking bravado that comes with them that would have been unimaginable three or four decades ago. Movies like “14 Peaks” and “The Alpinist” — or “Skywalkers: A Love Story,” the great documentary about rooftoppers — chart the impossible, and the very fact that the films exist can seem part of the impossible. That’s an element of their scary exhilaration. “Tenzing” fits into the genre, though in a far more traditional way.

Ryan Gosling has built one of Hollywood’s strangest little sub-specialties with some of his most recent movies: being a sad, handsome man in space. At some point, you have to imagine Gosling told his agent, “Get me more doomed sci-fi.” Since then, he’s played Ryland Grace in the massive space drama Project Hail Mary, Neil Armstrong in Damien Chazelle’s First Man, and he’s already booked his next trip beyond Earth by starring in Star Wars: Starfighter, the stand-alone Shawn Levy-directed movie coming next year. But before Gosling heads to a galaxy far, far away, one of his best sci-fi thrillers is getting another moment on streaming.

In William Shatner‘s new memoir, co-written by Joshua Brandon, “William Shatner … and You,” the “Star Trek” actor, 95, reflects on his seven-decade career by focusing on his fans, with anecdotes from former co-stars, collaborators and celebrities like Ben Stiller, Josh Groban, “Weird” Al Yankovic, Jeri Ryan, Michelle Hurd, Marina Sirtis, Seth MacFarlane, Hank Azaria, Nick Carter, Jason Alexander and Tom Bergeron, explaining how his work impacted them. In this exclusive excerpt, Shatner interviews Amazon founder Jeff Bezos about how the science fiction he loved as a kid — namely, “Star Trek” — ultimately inspired him to launch his Blue Origin aerospace company, which, in 2021, launched Shatner into space at 90 years old. An Unexpected Trekker who literally took me from pretend space-adventurer to real one is, of course, Jeff Bezos. I will forever be grateful for the opportunity he gave me on Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket in 2021. I documented that incredible,
