‘The Most Dangerous Game’: The Horror Classic That Inspired Generations

One of the most influential genre classics is also among the least seen. Though The Most Dangerous Game is often dismissed as a kind of proving ground for King Kong, time has demonstrated it to be much more than that. Though the film is approaching 95 years old, the ripples of its influence seem stronger than ever. Based on a 1924 O. Henry Award-winning short story by Richard Connell, the film was originally intended to be a much larger movie, on par with King Kong in spectacle and budget, featuring a much larger cast and more intricate adventure sequences. Unfortunately, the studio got a case of cold feet, especially because the film was being shot,

Soccer Aid for Unicef 2022 Raises Record £15.6 Million

Soccer Aid for Unicef 2022, broadcast live and exclusively on ITV and Stv last week from the London Stadium, has raised a record-breaking £15,673,728 so far for Unicef’s vital work giving children around the world the care-free, play filled childhoods they are entitled to. This record-breaking amount was raised thanks to the generous support of the UK public, ITV and Stv viewers, and The Power of Nutrition who have matched donations up to £4 million, meaning double the difference for children. This figure has smashed last year’s record total for money raised on the night. The hotly anticipated match took place at the sold-out London Stadium with 54,410 fans in attendance, 10 years on from the London 2012 Summer Olympics. The match ended 4-1 on penalties to Soccer Aid World XI, taking them into the overall lead with 6-5 wins since the inaugural 2006 match. The Cat and the Canary & The Ghost Breakers

The Cat and the Canary & The Ghost Breakers Blu ray Kino Lorber 1939, 1940 / 72, 83 min. Starring Bob Hope, Paulette Goddard Cinematography by Charles B. Lang Directed by Elliott Nugent, George Marshall Bob Hope’s brand of comedy may have been extinct by the sixties but it was alive and kicking in the pages of God Save the Mark, Donald E. Westlake’s comic crime novel about a schnook on the run for a murder he didn’t commit. Published in 1967, Westlake’s farce resembles one of Hope’s own movies; the pace is frenetic and the patter is as snappy as the comedian’s in his prime—a golden age exemplified by his one-two punch from 1939 and 1940, The Cat and the Canary and The Ghost Breakers. Those films present Hope in excelsis but in the hands of directors Elliott Nugent and George Marshall they serve as master classes in the tricky art of the scare comedy.

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1916)

A near-spotless restoration on the 104 year-old adaptation of the Jules Verne classic finally presents it in a form where we can judge its merits. The screenplay is an erratic jumble, imposing serial thrill elements onto an undigested amalgam of Vingt mille lieues sous les mers with its sequel L’Ile mystérieuse. But the physical production is state of the art for 1916, with an impressive live action submarine mockup and even more impressive scenes filmed underwater, reportedly a feature film first. Even better than the vivid restoration is a fact-filled commentary by film expert Anthony Slide. It’s no casual conversational chat track, but a wealth of good information about every aspect of the film, all delivered in good humor. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Blu-ray Kino Classics 1916 / B&w / 1:33 Silent Ap / 86 105 min. / Street Date July 28, 2020 / available through Kino Lorber / 29.95 Starring: Dan Hanlon, Edna Pendleton, Curtis Benton, Allen Holubar, Matt Moore,

Watching Drive-In Blaxploitation Movies From His Bedroom Window Made John Singleton Want to Direct

The late John Singleton, in the foreword for Donald Bogle’s new book “Hollywood Black,” tells an affecting story of watching movies at the Century Drive-In in Inglewood, Calif. from his bedroom window, and how, from there, he fell in love with filmmaking and telling black stories. “Without hearing any sound, I could see horror movies, actions films and my favorites, Blaxploitation movies right outside my bedroom window,” Singleton wrote. “I think that marked the beginning of my lifelong movie odyssey to see as many films as I could and to figure out the way that directors, writers, and actors told stories on screen. “Because I was most affected by the black movies, I asked myself how those black people got on screen? Who put them there?” he continued. “Even then, my struggle was to make the fantasy of filmmaking become my reality.” Also Read: John Singleton Appreciation: Pioneering Storyteller
