‘Veins’ Director on David Cronenberg and Not Liking Body Horror as a Viewer: “But It’s Fun to Do”

What becomes of our loved ones after death? Canadian director Raymond St-Jean‘s new movie, Veins, which world premiered in the main competition program of the 29th edition of the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF) late Monday evening, offers options you likely haven’t thought of before. “Isabelle travels to a nearly abandoned small town of Saint-Étienne with her girlfriend to visit her parents and receives quite a shock when she hears from her mother that her father died a few days ago and has already been buried,” reads a synopsis for the body horror thriller that also deals with social issues. “Isabelle wants to know why she was not notified of her father’s death sooner, or invited to the funeral. However, she only receives obscure explanations from both her mother and her uncle.” Romane Denis, Marie-Thérèse Fortin, Sylvain Marcel, Anana Rydval, and Richard Fréchette star in the movie,

However, that does not mean that we can live forever, just like that. Or can we? What is the price of eternal life, since everything comes with one? Who knows, maybe the pain, maybe our consciousness… The Quebecois filmmaker Raymond Saint-Jean and his co-writer Martin Girard might have an idea,

Éric Bruneau on Playing a Real-Life Serial Killer in Dusk for a Hitman

Though it might be known for being a country of peace and politeness, Canada has produced some of the most notorious serial killers the world has ever known. Paul Bernardo, Karla Homolka, Clifford Olson, and Robert Pickton are a few that come to mind, but one killer you probably haven't heard of is the subject of Raymond St-Jean's new film, Dusk for a Hitman: Donald Lavoie. Active throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, Lavoie was a self-proclaimed hit man based out of Montreal, Quebec, who assassinated at least 15 people under the guidance of mob boss Claude Dubois. In a story straight out of a gangster film, Lavoie (played to perfection by actor Éric Bruneau) eventually learned that Dubois' confidence in him had soured, turning the hunter into the hunted after a bounty was placed on his head. Lavoie sought refuge in the arms of the police, and in 1982 the

Éric Bruneau in 'Dusk for a Hitman' Quebecois Crime Thriller Trailer

"Your brother is no to be trusted, Donald." "It's him or me." Saban Films has revealed an official trailer for Dusk for a Hitman, a Quebecois crime thriller arriving in the US to watch on VOD starting in April. This already premiered and originally opened in Canada last year obviously. Set in the late 1970s, the most feared hitman in the Montreal underworld, Donald Lavoie, found himself hunted down by his former accomplices and by a tenacious police officer. Donald finds himself caught in a tightening vise in this film based loosely on a true story. The Montreal crime thriller stars Éric Bruneau as Donald Lavoie, with Benoît Gouin, Rose-Marie Perreault, Sylvain Marcel, Simon Landry-Desy, and Joakim Robillard. This has such an obvious slick and cheesy look and feel to it, even with this guy's mustache being an important part of the performance. It's worth a look if you're into

TIFF Review: Days of Happiness Brings a Crescendo of Catharsis

These should be joyful times for Emma (Sophie Desmarais). She’s thought of as the top of her class and is about to finish a year-long residency conducting for Orchestre Métropolitain in her hometown of Montreal. There’s talk she might even be up for a permanent position––which would work perfectly now that she’s started seeing one of the group’s cellists (Nour Belkhiria’s Naëlle). Emma should be drinking champagne with friends and celebrating with her family because future dreams are about to become her actual present. Yet her agent can’t help but always applaud their work rather than hers. While a red flag normally, the fact that Patrick (Sylvain Marcel) is also her father means the sirens are deafening. I say that with hindsight, though. Did I think it at the start? No. Because writer-director Chloé Robichaud does a wonderful job writing their dynamic as complex-yet-successful at the beginning.
