Venice Film Festival Reveals 2026 Award Winners: ‘Woman Unknown’ Takes the Golden Lion

Updated: Venice has completed its run of award winners on Saturday, with Danish filmmaker May el-Toukhy’s post-World War II Danish resistance thriller “Woman Unknown” taking the Golden Lion. See the full list of winners below. Maggie Gyllenhaal led this year’s jury, which also gave the Best Actress prize to “Woman Unknown” star Mathilde Arcel, who plays a woman tenuously grasping at her social status as people in her orbit start to discover that she had sex with a Nazi. She desperately tries to control the spread of information, but it quickly spirals out of control. The movie is looking for distribution. Other prize winners include “Possible Love” (Netflix), “Naza” (acquisitions title), “Dau” (acquisitions title), and Best Actor John Malkovich in “Wild Horse Nine” (Searchlight). He’s locked for an Oscar nomination for his performance as a disillusioned CIA agent in Martin McDonagh’s Easter Island-set dark comedy. Earlier:

Maggie Gyllenhaal questions male-dominated Venice Competition lineup

Maggie Gyllenhaal, jury president of the Venice Competition, said she “has a question” about the male-dominated Competition lineup at this year’s festival. “I guess it’s just finally become clear that men make better movies than women do,” deadpanned Gyllenhaal, in answer to a question at the opening press conference about the lack of films by women directors in the Competition today. Festival director Alberto Barbera laughed awkwardly beside Gyllenhaal before noting there are two films directed by women in the Competition – May el-Toukhy’s Woman Unknown, and Rachel Szor’s Naza, co-directed with Yuval Abraham. Venice Jury Head Maggie Gyllenhaal Calls For Empathy In Politically Charged Times; Addresses Dearth Of Women In Competition: “It’s A Systemic Problem”

Venice Film Festival jury president Maggie Gyllenhaal called for empathy at the opening press conference for the 83rd edition on Wednesday, which gets underway against politically charged times. Asked whether cinema should be political, Gyllenhaal replied that filmmakers and spectators needed to be open to all types of filmmakers and stories. “To me, the answer has something to do with empathy. I think that film allows an opening into an opportunity to find empathy inside of ourselves. Personally, I don’t believe that there is any subject or any filmmaker that shouldn’t be heard,” he said. “I think we can challenge ourselves to hear stories about the most corrupt, the most perverse people, because it opens up the opportunity to find empathy for those people, and even to look at the ways in which we might have a little bad guy inside us, a little perversity inside us, a little corruption inside us.
