Beans

A young Mohawk girl navigates racism and intolerance during a 78-day standoff with government forces.

Why watch this film?

Selected for the 2020 Toronto Film Festival, 'Beans' initially appears to be like any other "coming of age" movie -- or, in good old Portuguese, films about maturity. After all, the protagonist Beans (Kiawentiio) is a young teenager beginning to glimpse a new future for herself. However, filmmaker Tracey Deer brings new layers to this somewhat banal story when she puts this girl into something bigger: a real conflict between Mohawk natives and Quebec police. From there, what seemed like a banal coming-of-age film gains contours that speak of racism, intolerance, and coming of age in a society that doesn't accept you and your peers -- something that, in due proportion, recalls 'The Hate You Give'. In short, it's a movie that bets on a beaten structure to talk about something that, even decades after the event, continues to resonate in society and makes it necessary to reflect and discuss.
