Ricochet

A grieving Dutchman seeks revenge on his son's alleged murderer in a small Mexican town.

Why watch this film?

There's something rotten at the heart of the story in 'Ricochet'. Rodrigo Fiallega's film presents a "typical Mexican town" so glamorized, it seems to play with its own stereotype in order to reflect on its artificiality. It is precisely the solitary way in which the protagonist, Martjin, is framed, and the slow pace in which his story is revealed; that suggests there is something darker underneath: that this foreign ideal of a peaceful town and friendly neighbors is nothing more than a broken (or stolen) paradise by tragedy, the only memory left after death and departure.

Plot summary

Martijn is a middle-aged Dutchman who lives in a small town in Mexico that seems to have remained motionless in time. He and his wife Mariana suffered the death of their firstborn child. Ricochet takes place in a single day; the day Martijn learns that the alleged murderer of his son is to be released due to lack of evidence to prove his guilt. That is then when Martijn releases all his pent-up frustration and decides to take revenge. Based on a real case in Argentina.
