Why watch this film?
From Oscar-nominated filmmaker Matthew Heineman (“Cartel Land”), “The Boy from Medellín” is a documentary about one of the most famous Latin artists of the 2010s: reggaeton singer José Álvaro Osorio Balvin, better known as J Balvin. However, the documentary shows that an artist does not exist in a vacuum of their fame, but has a responsibility for the reach and impact of their messages in a historically turbulent Colombian society. The director does not delve into this insight and, while capturing moments of genuine vulnerability and spontaneity from his protagonist, this Prime Video documentary ends up being just another one of the many that are on Netflix, which are more promotional products than documentaries.
