Exclusive HBO documentary split into two parts, 'The Crime of the Century' is one of those journalistic documentaries that will leave anyone speechless. After all, the excellent documentarian Alex Gibney (‘The Inventor’) dives into the backrooms of the pharmaceutical industries. The reason? The abuse of legal drugs, coming from opioids, that addict and kill people all over the United States territory. With strong stories that show the urgency of this discussion, the documentary drags on a bit too much in some moments -- mainly for those who don't fully understand details of American bureaucracy. But Gibney manages to give a flavorful, and vigorous, rhythm to this criminal investigation in movie format. Without a doubt, shocking and revolting.

And a great story to better understand the workings of the Russian political system is 'Citizen K', a documentary by Alex Gibney (of the excellent 'The Inventor: Searching for Blood in Silicon Valley'). Here, over a little more than two hours, the filmmaker tells the story of Mikhail Khodorkovsky, one of the richest men in Russia who was forced to serve a ten-year prison sentence in Siberia - which many believe happened because of his feuds with politician Vladimir Putin. Thus, mixing a tone of denunciation with a good investigative narrative, 'Citizen K' shows the backstage of this man's imprisonment and his path to "stardom" as one of the most famous dissidents in Russia.
Crazy, Not Insane
Generally, movies about psychopaths focus on how the crimes were committed and possibly solved—whether they be documentaries or fiction. Now, filmmaker Alex Gibney (of the excellent 'The Inventor') looks at the other side. At the why. So, the documentary 'Crazy, Not Insane' dives into forensic psychiatrist Dorothy Otnow Lewis's research to understand what lies behind the minds and acts of psychopaths around the world. Obviously, it doesn't bring ready-made answers. But it's a good starting point for reflection and, thus, who knows, better understanding the story of crime.

It doesn't present reflections that aren't obvious to those who have read books or watched other films about the impact of social media, but it's a good starting point to learn about how misinformation works on the internet.

Directing duo Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss, known for the award-winning documentary Boys State, return now for Girls State. But it would be a mistake to say it's just a female version of the first documentary. Through a select group of girls participating in a federal government simulation in Missouri, this film reveals, firstly, how American politics operates. But secondly, and more importantly, it explores how an environment supposedly empowering girls can both propel and limit them at the same time, raising questions about what we understand about power and the ways to exercise it.
Earth Protectors
Documentaries about the climate crisis are never too many, but sometimes it can be challenging to find one that presents its arguments in a different and memorable way. Earth Protectors is a worthy attempt. Directed by French artist and environmental activist Anne de Carbuccia, it artistically documents her 10-year journey around the world exploring the impact of climate change in various countries, as well as the solutions undertaken to empower global citizens and address the crisis. At times, de Carbuccia and her works take more prominence than necessary, but she manages to present vital information.
