Why watch this film?
If there's one movie franchise that's synonymous with scares at the cinema, it's 'The Conjuring'. Created by James Wan (of 'Saw' and 'Aquaman'), the collection of films tells the story of Ed and Lorraine Warren's paranormal investigations, as well as following the journey of some hauntings - such as The Nun, Annabelle and The Crooked Man. So, eight years after the first movie, 'The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It' already has a captive audience and a ready-made formula: usually with the couple trying to exorcise someone or free the house from some haunting. In this one, however, director Michael Chaves (of the mediocre 'The Curse of La Llorona') goes further and turns the film into an investigation story - the so-called investigative terror, like 'Saw' and 'Pray For Us'. It's a more down-to-earth movie, with a simple plot and earthly threats. However, for those who want to jump out of their seat in fright, good news: it's still full of jumpscares.

The Curse of La Llorona
Part of the so-called Conjuring Universe (which includes the series 'Annabelle', 'The Nun' and, of course, 'The Conjuring') and based on one of the oldest legends of Mexico, 'The Curse of La Llorona' is directed by Michael Chaves, who is involved in other films of the franchise, but here, unfortunately, he gets stuck in the conventional. Still, there are some memorable sequences at a technical level and, without a doubt, the editing and editing are the best part of this production. However, the visual effects and the atmosphere of horror are flawed. Ideal for those who like sequences and spin-offs within the world of 'The Conjuring'.

The Nun II
It can be said, with some certainty, that The Nun is the weakest film in the Conjuring universe, closely competing with The Curse of La Llorona. In fact, the failure of these two sagas, spin-offs from the Ed and Lorraine Warren storyline, ultimately buried several other productions that were supposed to continue in this horror universe. Therefore, it's not surprising that The Nun II follows the same path as the previous film. Directed now by Michael Chaves (of The Conjuring 3 and The Curse of La Llorona), the feature film once again follows Irene, the young nun played by Taissa Farmiga, who faced Valak in the previous film and now, as if by fate, encounters the demon in the form of a nun once more. While The Nun had a more gothic tone, this new production delves into bloody terror that never tires of exploring different settings; at some point, it seems that Valak is an all-knowing and omnipresent being. It gets tiring. It might be a good option for those who enjoy going to the movies to watch generic horror films and have a good laugh with friends. But, beyond that, it's the lowest chapter in the franchise.
Horror
The Exorcism
The Exorcism marks the second film featuring star Russell Crowe in an exorcism role within a year—the other being the fun and carefree The Pope's Exorcist. Here, however, Crowe isn't exactly an exorcist but an actor playing this common type of character in a horror film. Marked by filming delays, interrupted during the pandemic and resumed four years later, the feature attempts to play with the metanarrative of the proposal and how actors relate to their characters, making brief comments on how the stories they portray can seep into the lives of the actors themselves. It is far (very far!) from a perfect film, with a broken rhythm and a glaring lack of depth. However, it can still be entertaining—despite all the parental drama—to watch Russell Crowe once again portray this character battling demons.

Run Rabbit Run
Loss and family trauma have been fertile themes in horror in recent years, with films like The Babadook and Relic. Understandably, similar themes can become tiresome, which could be said about Run Rabbit Run. The film follows a fertility doctor (Sarah Snook, Succession), whose seven-year-old daughter (Lily LaTorre) begins to exhibit strange behaviors that mimic those of a deceased family member. The movie builds tension around this mystery, gradually revealing the events that led to the past tragedy. Its lack of novelty is compensated by a genuinely tense and terrifying atmosphere, with strong performances from Snook and debutante Lily LaTorre.

Arcadian
Arcadian - A thrilling post-apocalyptic horror film, directed by Benjamin Brewer and starring Nicolas Cage. Cage plays a father who, together with his twin sons, struggles to survive in a devastated world, facing sinister creatures that appear at night. With a talented young cast, including Jaeden Martell and Maxwell Jenkins, and shown at SXSW 2024, it promises an intense and visceral experience, marked by impactful images.
