Why watch this film?
Movie inspired by Charles Dickens' work, 'Serebryanye Konki' is an exclusive Netflix feature film that takes a different path than contemporary Russian cinema. No exaggerated horror productions like 'The Bride' or 'The Mermaid', nor the seriousness of 'No Love' or 'Leviathan'. Here, debut filmmaker Michael Lockshin travels to the turn of the 19th century to 20th century to talk about a boy who enters a life of crime by pickpocketing and ends up falling madly in love with a young aristocrat. The visuals are stunning, not losing anything from period productions made in the United States. However, it is worth saying: despite the references in literature from that time, with an interesting reconstruction of customs and social relationships, 'Serebryanye Konki' ends up embracing melodrama to talk about the relationship between these two characters. But still, a good period film to dive a little deeper into Russia's history and, above all, escape the monotony of American films.
