Why watch this film?
Owning one of the most creative minds in pre-adolescent horror, R.L. Stine made his mark in literature, and later on the big screen, with the delightful 'Goosebumps' saga. But of course, Stine is not just that. Another franchise of books by the author now hits the screens with the Netflix trilogy 'Fear Street'. In the first feature film of this batch, 'Fear Street Part 1: 1994', we follow a group of teenagers who discover an evil that has plagued the city they live in for over 300 years - in the style of 'It: The Thing'. The movie brings a metalinguistic proposal, bringing references to the terror of the era, with scares and plenty of violence.

Stine's horror books. In 'Fear Street Part 2: 1978', we are presented with another chapter of how the curse has plagued the city of Shadyside. This time, the story takes place in a camp and makes good references to 1980s slasher films, such as 'Friday the 13th' (1980), 'Just Before Dawn' (1981) and 'Sleepaway Camp' (1983). Again, the movie has a teenage vibe but a high rating due to its sex scenes - another clear inspiration from the old serial killer productions - and graphic death.
Fear Street Part 3: 1666
After a first movie with uninteresting characters and a second one a bit more consistent, 'Fear Street Part 3: 1666' seeks to leave a positive mark in the audience's memory. After all, this new production directed again by Leigh Janiak is the last part of the story of the witch that haunts a small town in the United States - and it is also inspired by a book by R.L. Stine. Here, more specifically, the production dives into the origin of this character that has been haunting the young protagonists since the first movie, diving headfirst into the brutality of the 17th century. There are more references to macabre cinema and that seeks to scare with an unrestrained violence or jumpscares, like 'The Blair Witch'. It works, even more with the interesting return of most of the characters we saw in the other two movies. There are still problems, and it does not fully reach the ideal of awakening the audience's nostalgia. But it entertains with violence, crimes and a macabre tone.

The Nightman
The Nightman a dramatic thriller that explores the dangerous boundary between love and darkness. The story follows a young pregnant woman who begins to question the perfection of her boyfriend upon discovering his possible involvement in mysterious disappearances and murders, linked to his sleepwalking behavior. With praised performances and precise direction, the film delves into complex themes of relationships and personal dilemmas, keeping the audience engaged in its dark suspense.
Abigail
Abigail demonstrates why we should keep an eye on the director duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, especially when they have original material at their disposal (they also directed Scream 5 and 6, with mixed results). Abigail is a film that manages to balance the terror and tragedy of its characters with the absurdity of its premise, thanks to a clever script that plays with the conventions of vampire literature, careful direction, and a phenomenal cast (led by Mexican actress Melissa Barrera and Dan Stevens) that fully utilizes their roles. The plot follows a group of kidnappers tasked with a delicate job: to kidnap a millionaire's daughter for ransom. However, it all turns out to be a trap: beneath the guise of a 12-year-old girl, the victim is actually an ancient vampire who likes to play with her food. Like Ready or Not in its time, this film is self-aware, pushing its story and violence to the most absurd and fun limits without falling into self-parody. It won’t change the history of horror cinema, but it’s an excellent (and even stylish for a film of its genre, I dare say) choice for a fun time at the movies with friends.
