Why watch this film?
Studio Ghibli took a risk and changed the type of animation, known for its beautiful animated works, this time we see the first step into the 3D universe and it is satisfactory. Perhaps the films work better with the aesthetic we already know, but testing new formats shouldn't be a problem for the audience's eyes. However, it is difficult not to imagine how the animation would be in 2D. 'Âya to Majo' is a well-made production, with a good soundtrack and a great story to watch, you will rejoice with the protagonist and her power of persuasion. Unfortunately, the feature film did not please the critics, but do not let yourself be carried away by that. Gorō Miyazaki, son of the legend Hayao Miyazaki, creator of Ghibli, shows once again that his father is his greatest inspiration and tries to bring a bit of that to the film, and also make it clear that he is in search of his cinematic identity, which is very important.

Based on Ursula K. Le Guin's 'Terramar' saga, 'Gedo senki' is the first feature-length animation from Studio Ghibli, directed by Gorō Miyazaki, son of the legendary Hayao Miyazaki. It must be said that, narratively, it is one of the weakest efforts of the prestigious Japanese animation studio, but it maintains the visual quality that characterizes it, in addition to dealing with universal themes such as redemption and balance of nature. You have to watch this production with an open mind, without high expectations. Thus, one can find a regular animation, albeit forgettable, but with the good aesthetics of Studio Ghibli.
From Up on Poppy Hill
This is the second film by Gorō Miyazaki (son of Hayao Miyazaki) with Studio Ghibli, with much better results than his first feature film, 'Tales of Earthsea'. 'Kokuriko-zaka kara' leaves behind the fantastical worlds to tell us a more everyday and nostalgic story of modern Japan (making it more akin to Isao Takahata's films like 'Grave of the Fireflies'), specifically in the period of recovery after the devastating Second World War, with the country preparing for the 1964 Olympics and amidst growing student activism (a phenomenon observed in many parts of the world during the decade). Underneath the surface, the film is not just about teenagers searching for their identity, but about a country in the same process, struggling between tradition and modernity in a new era. It is undoubtedly a much slower-paced film than Ghibli's more famous fantasy offerings, but it is a beautiful and nostalgic story that rewards the patience needed for its slower pace.

Robot Dreams
Sometimes we get so carried away by the marketing power of studios like Disney Pixar, and we overlook other avenues for deep and powerful animated stories that don't need excessively complex plots to evoke emotions. Such is the case with Robot Dreams, a Hispanic-French production directed by Pablo Berger (2012’s Snow White), based on the eponymous graphic novel by Sara Varon. Set in New York during the 80s, the story follows Dog, whose solitary life leads him to buy a robot for companionship. Their friendship grows, but an unfortunate day at the beach forces them to separate and long for the day of their reunion. Virtually without dialogue, with vibrant animation and a captivating visual language, the film tells a simple yet profoundly moving story about (curiously) human relationships and the course they take despite (or because of) accidents, fortuitous circumstances, and uncontrollable events that happen throughout life.
