Why watch this film?
Movies about groups of people who must survive deadly games have become a kind of subgenre in Hollywood -- in addition to the Jigsaw movie saga, there's also the disturbing 'Cube' or even the Spanish 'The Well'. And for the teenage audience there's a surefire option: 'Escape Room', a movie saga inspired by the famous rooms where participants must escape before time runs out. After a creative but unremarkable first movie, 'Escape Room: Tournament of Champions' seeks to raise the level of the thing. Zoey (Taylor Russell) and Ben (Logan Miller) are back in the game, but now they must escape from deadly rooms against other challenge champions. There's acid rain, subway shocks and unimaginable things. It repeats the good fun of the first movie, albeit with too simplistic effects, and gives continuity to this escapist adventure that doesn't seem to have an expiration date anytime soon. It won't change your life and it will hardly become a beloved movie in your memory -- after all, director Adam Robitel, the same as the first movie, just does the basics. But it will entertain you, especially if you watch it with friends or in a group. Oh, and one more thing: in the United States, Sony Pictures released a version with additional scenes and an alternate ending involving a character played by Isabelle Fuhrman, the girl from 'Orphan', which shows details of the company that controls the games. Maybe this subject, which was totally left out of the official version that came to theaters, will gain more layers with Fuhrman soon.

Plot summary

Escape Room
'Escape Room' is the teen version of the bloody horror franchise 'Saw', only taking advantage of the "escape rooms" that have become popular in the entertainment scene of major cities. The movie also bears some resemblance to 'The Happening', especially when the story reveals the connection between each of the participants. Director Adam Robitel captures the audience with intensity and suspense in a pure entertainment movie. Despite wavering with a script obsessed with surprising at each death, it still is a fun cinematic experience for horror fans.
Insidious: The Last Key
Shadowed by 'The Conjuring', the 'Insidious' franchise never achieved the same impact and popularity as the Warrens' story - a valid comparison since both were created by the same filmmaker, James Wan. However, he only stayed in front of this ghost and hauntings story in the first two films, only signing as producer in the next two. 'Insidious: The Last Key', the fourth feature film of the franchise, already shows some exhaustion of the formula under the baton of director Adam Robitel (from the fun 'Escape Room'). Thus, more demanding viewers with the quality of scares should consider the movie unremarkable, even monotonous. However, those who take it lightly should have fun and have a good time with the well-crafted ghosts ready to give some scares.

The Nightman a dramatic thriller that explores the dangerous boundary between love and darkness. The story follows a young pregnant woman who begins to question the perfection of her boyfriend upon discovering his possible involvement in mysterious disappearances and murders, linked to his sleepwalking behavior. With praised performances and precise direction, the film delves into complex themes of relationships and personal dilemmas, keeping the audience engaged in its dark suspense.
Abigail
Abigail demonstrates why we should keep an eye on the director duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, especially when they have original material at their disposal (they also directed Scream 5 and 6, with mixed results). Abigail is a film that manages to balance the terror and tragedy of its characters with the absurdity of its premise, thanks to a clever script that plays with the conventions of vampire literature, careful direction, and a phenomenal cast (led by Mexican actress Melissa Barrera and Dan Stevens) that fully utilizes their roles. The plot follows a group of kidnappers tasked with a delicate job: to kidnap a millionaire's daughter for ransom. However, it all turns out to be a trap: beneath the guise of a 12-year-old girl, the victim is actually an ancient vampire who likes to play with her food. Like Ready or Not in its time, this film is self-aware, pushing its story and violence to the most absurd and fun limits without falling into self-parody. It won’t change the history of horror cinema, but it’s an excellent (and even stylish for a film of its genre, I dare say) choice for a fun time at the movies with friends.
28 Days Later
