A movie is a cultural product composed of various artistic works - and which, almost always, resonates with the culture, traditions, and behaviors of where it is inserted. That's why it's interesting to follow Chinese feature films, as they reflect a different (and therefore surprising) context than what we are used to. 'Ci sha xiao shuo jia' is simply perfect for this journey, as it brings a plot about a writer of fantasy novels based on Chinese culture who is threatened by a murderer - and from then on, reality and fiction begin to mix. The plot may remind of American productions such as 'Stranger Than Fiction', 'The Secret Window', and 'Adaptation', but there is an entire journey through an amazing world entirely based on Oriental culture, as well as action scenes like only the Chinese know how to do.

Biblical epics in the style of Ben-Hur are so recognizable in classic cinema that they have been the subject of witty parodies (most notably, the also classic Monty Python's Life of Brian). Here, director Jeymes Samuel (The Harder They Fall) filters the conventions of these films through a black lens, with a cast led by names like Lakeith Stanfield, Alfre Woodard, David Oyelowo, Omar Sy, and Anna Diop, among others. The Book of Clarence follows a man who, aspiring to be someone in life, decides to capitalize on the popularity of Jesus of Nazareth for his own benefit. Through the biblical cliché, the film examines issues such as black identity, the distortion of faith by organized religions, and the very sense of goodness and compassion. It's somewhat uneven but nonetheless entertaining.
