Why watch this film?
George MacKay, from '1917', returns to another war story, this time set in World War II and alongside Jeremy Irons. The historical context of the film is based on the story of Neville Chamberlain (Irons), Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from May 1937 to May 1940. The story follows the efforts of the young German diplomat Paul (Jannis Niewöhner) to smuggle a document to his former Oxford University classmate Hugh (George MacKay), now Chamberlain's private secretary. This event precedes World War II. It is a grandiose and different production, despite bringing a very recurrent theme in cinema.

Plot summary
It is Autumn 1938 and Europe stands on the brink of war. Adolf Hitler is preparing to invade Czechoslovakia and Neville Chamberlain's government desperately seeks a peaceful solution. With the pressure building, Hugh Legat, British civil servant, and Paul von Hartmann, German diplomat, travel to Munich for the emergency Conference. As negotiations begin, the two old friends find themselves at the center of a web of political subterfuge and very real danger.

In the story, a survivor of a terrorist attack joins a European youth movement that seeks nothing less than to take control of the country. For a production that wants to denounce this type of politics and show how wrong racism is, it is a bit contradictory that the entire cast is composed of white people. 'Je Suis Karl' makes you reflect on youth, this desire for change that we have at certain moments in life, and also on the influence of student movements.

In Kidnapped (Rapito), Italian filmmaker Marco Bellocchio delves into one of the murkiest and most controversial episodes in the history of the Catholic Church, the "Mortara case". In 1851, when Jewish boy Edgardo Mortara becomes gravely ill, his Catholic nanny decides to baptize him in an emergency. However, papal law dictates that all Catholics must be raised as such, so the cardinal orders the boy to be taken and handed over to the church, against his parents' wishes, who decide to fight for him. The film recounts a controversial case that captured the attention of the rest of Europe and America, and skillfully portrays the clash of interests between the waning power of the church, Mortara's parents, and public opinion, with irreversible consequences for all involved.
