Why watch this film?
Director of films such as 'Rebecca: An Unforgettable Woman', 'Free Fire' and 'At the Top of Power', British Ben Wheatley shows his reading of a horror story in 'In The Earth'. In the plot, which has touches of 'The Witch' and 'The Blair Witch', the feature film follows the journey of a scientist and a forest police officer who, while the world seeks a cure against a dangerous virus, venture into the forest on a journey that takes sinister turns. Although it has the problems seen in Wheatley's previous films, such as a predictable script and laziness in the realization, 'In The Earth' hits the mark by creating a tense atmosphere with a psychedelic touch.

Exclusive to Netflix, 'Rebecca' is an adaptation of the literary work of British author Daphne Du Maurier, which was the basis of three films by master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock - 'The Lodger', 'The Birds' and, of course, 'Rebecca' itself. The new version, starring Lily James and Armie Hammer, may not be a remake, but it's hard not to compare it to Hitchcock's feature, which became an Oscar-winning classic in the 1940s. The film tells the story of a young woman who marries a wealthy man who is still haunted by memories of his deceased wife. Directed by Ben Wheatley, 'Rebecca' may be surprising for those who don't know the story and slightly tedious for those who watched the 1940 version. Wheatley brought more of a problematic romance than a suspense, which is well built both in the book and in Hitchcock's version. Despite this, the feature has not lost its glamor, has beautiful cinematography and excellent performance by Kristin Scott Thomas.
Free Fire
This British movie (though set in the US) which screened at the Toronto Film Festival, mixes action and comedy in true British style. It has good pacing, an interesting cast including Brie Larson (from 'Room'), Cillian Murphy (from the 'Dark Knight' trilogy) and Armie Hammer ('Nocturnal Animals') and a funny storyline. There's nothing particularly innovative or spectacular here which may frustrate some, but it works as pure, simple entertainment.
Meg 2: The Trench
The first Meg could be interpreted as a remake of Jaws mutated by a megaproduction Hollywood ecosystem: everything is bigger, more spectacular, more scandalous, with more characters and more action. And at the time, it worked. But if something shows this sequel, it's that more isn't always better. Meg 2: The Trench follows hero Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) on a new adventure in the depths of the sea, where he and his crew end up trapped. The plot focuses for a considerable part on the fight for survival and exit to the surface. However, the footage is inflated by greater emphasis on action sequences with Statham, and although the last act is fun, there's not much original in this sequel that feels tired and uninspired.

The Nightman
The Nightman a dramatic thriller that explores the dangerous boundary between love and darkness. The story follows a young pregnant woman who begins to question the perfection of her boyfriend upon discovering his possible involvement in mysterious disappearances and murders, linked to his sleepwalking behavior. With praised performances and precise direction, the film delves into complex themes of relationships and personal dilemmas, keeping the audience engaged in its dark suspense.
Abigail
Abigail demonstrates why we should keep an eye on the director duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, especially when they have original material at their disposal (they also directed Scream 5 and 6, with mixed results). Abigail is a film that manages to balance the terror and tragedy of its characters with the absurdity of its premise, thanks to a clever script that plays with the conventions of vampire literature, careful direction, and a phenomenal cast (led by Mexican actress Melissa Barrera and Dan Stevens) that fully utilizes their roles. The plot follows a group of kidnappers tasked with a delicate job: to kidnap a millionaire's daughter for ransom. However, it all turns out to be a trap: beneath the guise of a 12-year-old girl, the victim is actually an ancient vampire who likes to play with her food. Like Ready or Not in its time, this film is self-aware, pushing its story and violence to the most absurd and fun limits without falling into self-parody. It won’t change the history of horror cinema, but it’s an excellent (and even stylish for a film of its genre, I dare say) choice for a fun time at the movies with friends.
28 Days Later
