Why watch this film?

German cinema is strong, vibrant, and always tackling contemporary issues without restraints, without detours, without half-measures. That is exactly what happens with 'Große Freiheit'. In post-war Germany, young Hans is repeatedly incarcerated for being homosexual. The only stable relationship in his life becomes his cellmate, Viktor. What starts with repulsion turns into something called love, in a plot directed with emotion and truth by Sebastian Meise ('Stillleben'). It's hard not to be moved or impacted by Hans, beautiful and tragic in a world that doesn't understand him.
