Why watch this film?

Interesting fact: 'Deep Impact' was released the same summer as Michael Bay's famous 'Armageddon', which affected its popularity and box office performance. However, if you're looking for a movie about humanity's struggle to survive an impending meteorite impact, focusing more on characters than action, then this is your best choice. 'Deep Impact' focuses on a journalist (Téa Leoni) investigating a strange rumor around the President of the United States (Morgan Freeman), only to uncover the truth: an asteroid is on a collision course with Earth. It may be a bit melodramatic at times, but it captures and conveys the tragedy of such a scenario. The story follows several subplots featuring a great ensemble cast, including in addition to Leoni and Freeman, legendary Robert Duvall, Elijah Wood, and Jon Favreau, among others.

Plot summary

A comet is hurtling toward Earth and could mean the end of all human life. The U.S. government keeps the crisis under wraps, but crack reporter Jenny Lerner uncovers the truth -- forcing U.S. President Beck to announce his plan. Grizzled astronaut Spurgeon "Fish" Tanner and his team will land on the comet and lay explosives, hopefully deterring the object from its doomsday course. If not, humanity will have to prepare for the worst.
