Babysitter

A sexist man and his brother co-author a book to apologize for their past misogyny, but a mysterious babysitter forces them to face their sexual anxieties.

Why watch this film?

"Babysitter" is a psychosexual horror comedy, the second feature film from Cadenian actress and director Monia Chokri. Based on Catherine Léger's play, the movie follows Cédric (Patrick Hivon) as he is removed from his job after harassing a reporter on national television. In an attempt to get his life back on track, he and his girlfriend and daughter's mother (Chokri, who also stars in the production) embark on a journey to understand the roots of his misogyny and machismo. With the arrival of mysterious babysitter Amy (played by the exceptional Nadia Tereszkiewicz), the couple's power dynamics shift drastically. Featuring oppressive close-ups that make the viewer feel uncomfortable and harassed, "Babysitter" is not straightforward in its themes. Rather, it is full of subtlety and metaphors about women's social roles that require constant reflection. However, if one appreciates the subjectivity, the production becomes something more: the quality of the performances, the cinematography, the 1970s softcore aesthetic, and the soundtrack together provide the audience with a memorable experience.

Plot summary

Middle-aged sexist Cédric gets suspended from work after drunkenly kissing a female reporter during a prank on live TV. Stuck at home with his long-suffering girlfriend Nadine and their incessantly crying baby, Cédric teams up with his sensitive brother Jean-Michel to co-author a confessional book apologizing for their past misogyny. Enter Amy: a mysterious and provocative young babysitter, who, like a Mary Poppins of the libido, forces the trio to face their sexual anxieties while turning their lives upside down.
