Why watch this film?

Elegance Bratton's feature film debut, inspired by his own life experiences, is an inspiring story about not only confronting prejudice in its most cruel and brutal forms, but also about triumphing in the process. The Inspection is the story of an African American gay man (Jeremy Pope) who, despite being unable to hide his true nature, decides to enlist with the Marines in hopes of gaining approval from his homophobic mother (Gabrielle Union). He soon faces the brutality of the military system stoked by deeply ingrained prejudices, but he also finds unexpected belonging and camaraderie that change his life forever. It's a deeply personal story that almost veers into melodrama, but if you enjoy these stories of overcoming adversity or are looking for something that provides a necessary dose of awareness on the LGBTQIA+ community, it's a good option.
