Plot summary
The teenager Samuca is only 17 years old and discovers that his girlfriend, Alicia, is pregnant. The news comes to light at a not very favorable moment in Samuca’s life, just when he thought everything was going very well. For having committed the same “slam” as his mother Melina, having a son at the same age as she had him, Samuca feels pressured. Themes such as teenage pregnancy and questions about life gain visibility and are unfolded throughout the plot.

Carlinhos e Carlão
What a surprise is "Carlinhos & Carlão", an original, necessary and refreshing national comedy with the exclusive seal of Amazon Prime Video. Starring an inspired Luis Lobianco (from "Porta dos Fundos"), the feature film tells the story of a macho and homophobic man who ends up being enchanted by a closet. And what happens is that every day, from 7 pm, he turns into Carlinhos, a happy, cheerful, fun and... gay man. Despite dealing with sensitive and urgent issues, "Carlinhos & Carlão" manages to bring a pleasant lightness while making people laugh. The memorable soundtrack, with songs from Gretchen and "I Will Survive", set the tone, despite the obviousness. But Lobianco, with lightness and brilliance, manages to move between the characters with humor and strength. A movie to laugh, of course, but also to think about some important paths for society.
Dissonantes
Who doesn't have a friend who was stuck in the past, having difficulty accepting that we all need to grow and open up to new possibilities and opportunities? In 'Dissonantes' this is the case of Paulo (Marcelo Serrado), a 45-year-old man trying to live his dream of making the music he likes, but self-pressure, self-pity and Peter Pan syndrome don't allow it. He, however, finds himself involved with Loly (Thati Lopes), who seeks to win a highly commercial music reality show. From there, the feature film directed by Pedro Amorim ('Mato Sem Cachorro') builds a dramedy that addresses this late maturity, which makes us reflect on our own conceptions and thoughts. Could it be that, apart from exaggeration, we are not a little like Paulo and don't get out of the way, seeing life pass by while complaining? Or, at the other extreme, are we not in Loly's place, losing our essence by being only what others want? What is the middle of the road? Well executed technically and with good direction from Amorim, the movie ends up skidding in the script - mainly in the way it portrays the flaws of Serrado's character. Still, it is an interesting story about loss, love and music.

Underdog
In its effort to raise awareness about the precarious social reality of certain sectors of the population, Mexican cinema tends to fall into miserabilism (or so-called "poverty porn"), whether in documentaries or fiction. The quest of Mexican cinema for new creative and narrative horizons is ongoing, and in the case of Underdog (Correr para vivir), director and co-writer Gerardo Dorantes opts for what, in its conventions, is an action and crime thriller extrapolated to the context of the Rarámuri (or Tarahumara) indigenous people of northern Mexico, famous for their running tradition (and their extraordinary talent for it). The plot follows two brothers: Omero (Vladimir Rivera), who dreams of being a runner; and Capó (Manuel Cruz Vivas), who is more talented but also troubled. Both are dragged into a life of service to the drug trade when Capó, in an attempt to provide for his pregnant girlfriend, fails in a cocaine delivery. To be honest, it's a good attempt to steer Mexican cinema towards other directions that are not the typical exploitation of social dramas or anthropological documentaries. However, the film ends up falling into the same vices, representing Rarámuri culture from a superficial and idealized exoticism, creating entertainment from a real social context with little sensitivity.
Downtown Owl
'Downtown Owl' - Searching for a break from her cosmopolitan life in Milwaukee, Julia Rabia (Lily Rabe), arrives in the closeknit Reagan-era town of Owl, North Dakota for a one-semester high school teaching job. But when the small town turns out to be a wonderland of second-string poets, smoldering Marlboro Men, and a social hierarchy that echoes high school, Julia doesn't know if she's come to town to get away from home or to find it. Ed Harris, Vanessa Hudgens, Henry Golding, and Finn Wittrock also star in this Great Plains dark dramedy directed by Lily Rabe and Hamish Linklater. Based on the novel by Chuck Klosterman.
