In the Fade
After a bomb attack, a woman loses her husband and son. Thus begins a journey that is not of acceptance, but rather to understand all that has happened and the quest for justice. This is the plot of the latest film from director Fatih Akin (of 'Soul Kitchen' and 'Do Outro Lado'), which mixes the spirit of current times, including its idiosyncrasies, extremism, fears, and dangers--worthy of the 2018 Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film. One of the great highlights, besides competent direction, is Diane Kruger's ('Inglorious Bastards') performance in the role of the protagonist. With energy, the German actress makes us feel the despair of a woman who saw her life torn apart--deserving the Best Actress award at the Cannes Festival. In the end, we realize that there are no easy solutions, but that addressing the issue of extremism and reflecting on it is already an important start.

The Golden Glove
Based on the true story of a German psychopath, 'Der goldene Handschuh' was sold as a bizarre, grotesque film. A kind of 'The House That Jack Built', by Lars Von Trier, even more inhuman and cruel. And indeed: some sequences are really stomach-turning. However, more than that, director Fatih Akin (of the excellent 'In Pieces') brings here a study on the limits of the human being. 'Der goldene Handschuh' explores the bottom of the well, but always with a critical, reflective look. It is not violence for violence's sake alone. Those who go beyond this barrier, and can endure the realistic scenes of violence, will find a strong and profound movie about a man who does not understand himself and, above all, does not understand his surroundings and his life. Special mention also for the performance of Jonas Dassler ('The Silent Revolution') and for Akin's dry and firm direction, which was even nominated, with the movie, for the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival.
